Winter Garden by Kristin Hannah

This book is a reminder that evil sometimes rules and people are resilient, the heart is stronger than the mind, and love is a survival tool.

The story opens when two very different sisters are called home due to their father’s illness. Nina an award winning, world-famous photojournalist, and Meredith, a mom running her home and the family orchard.

Their mother, Anya, is in denial, still cold and distant, as she has always been. The only thing that held them in proximity were the memories of the fairy tales she told them as children.

As their father lay dying, he asks for one thing, that they listen to the fairy tale from their mother, one last time, all the way to the end.

Alternating from present to distant past, Anya reluctantly shares her story through the fairy tale. The harrowing story comes to life as they realize the secrets and heartache their mother has lived with, it changes everything.

Stories like this are the inspiration for connecting our lives to history. So beautifully written, Kristin Hannah does a phenomenal job telling us about an ugly piece of history through Anya’s story and the horrors the people of Russia lived through in some of their darkest years.

This was a beautiful portrayal of historical fiction depicting real life journeys.

Loved it! Kristin Hannah never disappoints!

This was my second time reading, my book club chose it and it was just as impactful and enjoyable as the first time I read it. 5/5⭐
