Waylaid on Whidbey Island by Laurie Herlich

A charming cozy read, set on Whidbey Island, a quaint little place with only three points of entry or exit.

This mystery features Merry Irving, a quirky dog sitter who is trying to avoid a serial killer.  She takes the job of pet sitting three dogs for a friend who is away for an extended period.

After getting acquainted with the dogs, she runs into another mystery that she accidentally becomes involved with. Then she meets Dave, a retired cop, and the two dive into the suspense of a possible murder on the island.

I enjoyed this cozy mystery. Gallagher, a big goofy dog, won my heart right away. Even the dogs get in the mix and face danger in this story.

I absolutely love the way the author portrays the duty of prioritizing care for the animals. They are always a primary concern for Merry throughout the story. I love dogs and this aspect won me over. Some books just throw in pets but this one really includes them in the plot. 4.5/5⭐
