Appalachian Song by Michelle Shocklee

A story of sacrifice, love, and hope. I enjoyed it.

Songbird holds a special place in Bertie Jenkins’ heart. From the moment she found the injured girl, the two had a bond. Bertie nursed Songbird back to health and the girl found a new family.

When trouble knocks on the door, Songbird makes a harrowing decision that changes the course of all their lives.

Walker Wylie is shocked thirty years later when he is told about his adoption after his father’s death. He goes on a quest for answers and meets Reese, a midwife. They journey to find Bertie and Walker’s story.

This was a wonderful Southern fiction story laced with history and culture of the Appalachian Mountains.

I really enjoyed the story but I wanted a little more. The characters were wonderful and the dialect was an excellent tool to enhance the story.

I listened to the audiobook and I recommend it, excellent narration.

Bertie and her family were great. She was a giving, nurturing soul. I feel like there should have been more of Songbird’s story told rather than a quick fill-in at the end. There should have been something more, in my opinion.

Overall, the characters were beautifully depicted and the story takes the reader right into the Appalachian Mountain culture. 4/5⭐
