Tough Luck by Sandra Dallas
In 1863, Haidie Richards and her brother, Boots, are placed in a work orphanage after their mother dies. Their father left four years earlier to find gold in Colorado. After receiving only 3 letters, Haidie’s impatience spurs her to flee the orphanage with her brother on a quest to find their father.
Travelling is harsh and Haidie is disguised as a boy for obvious reasons. Along the way, she discovers her community of “found family”. It’s a unique cast of characters including a card shark, “spinster” sisters, and a fierce dog.
Once Haidie finds her father, she calls on her friends to help right a wrong in a get-even plot of revenge.
This was an entertaining journey with a tenacious young woman in the wild American West.
The characters were awesome and relatable. I just really enjoyed the story, it carried me as the reader from beginning to end, holding my interest and engaging my imagination. Excellent writing! 5/5⭐
