The Friend Zone by Abby Jimenez **Spoilers**

Let me first say that this book was disappointing on many levels. Also, do not let this book or my review keep you from enjoying the author’s many other books, I have read many really good ones from Abby Jimenez.
This book seemed as though it was written by a fifteen-year-old pretending to be a twenty-year-old. The writing was immature, the characters were immature and the sex scenes were horrific in description and content. The language was unnecessary.
I don’t think someone suffering with female problems the way the main character was would worship a guy’s penis but that’s what we have here. Not really a love story between two adults but a lust story between an immature woman and a guy’s penis. No real substance to the whole story, they fall in love, she can’t be with him because she’s whiny and self-consumed. They can’t have a real conversation they just have really poor sex, that they think is amazing, and stay horny all the time.
So, she has fertility issues but doesn’t tell him, makes assumptions, He chases her continuously even though she’s so shallow she can’t tell him what’s wrong but she can’t stay away either.
The first 2/3 is centered around their best friends getting married, then the climax of the story is the groom gets in a wreck days before the wedding.
The two still cat and mouse like two immature teenagers passing notes in class or the hall at school.
My thoughts:
This book was a train wreck and a hangover revisited as a plane crash.
I only give it a ½ start for some of the witty comments that did make me laugh. It could have been more but I had to endure reading the sex scenes and the penis worship dialog. Sloppy, nasty sex scene, and no relationship of any substance.
With the subject matter of fertility issues, it could have been so much more but here we are. Instead, you have a surprise pregnancy after one encounter and she’s had unprotected sex for years, IUD and serious fibroids to the point her doctor agreed to a hysterectomy, NOT realistic in any stretch of the imagination.
Second, the best friend, Brandon gets in a serious accident, hit by a drunk driver, makes a miraculous recovery and then the author kills him off, for what? Another book?
I didn’t find much happiness in this book, a woman with fertility issues that is dishonest and misleading. Poorly written sex scenes with penis worship, and so much more, made me want to stop reading but my book club picked it and most of them also disliked it for the same reasons.
I did like the idea of the potato-gram, and the ending was decent.
I have enjoyed all of the other Abby Jimenez books that I have read but this one will make me think twice about choosing my next one.
Favorite quotes:
“Welcome to my brain. Strap in and keep your arms inside the ride at all times.”
“Food was my currency. Hungry was an emotion for me. I felt that shit in my soul.
