Necessary Lies by Diane Chamberlain

This is a brilliant story touching on the topic of eugenics in a very dignified way, wonderful writing!

Ivy Hart isn’t left with much after losing her parents. Burdened by caring for everyone in the house from her grandma to her sister and nephew. Ivy doesn’t have much to hold on to.

Struggling to survive on a tobacco farm, the family is in need. Jane Forrester takes a job as a social worker for Grace County, North Carolina. She fills a desperate need for the office and the community there. As she goes against the grain and becomes emotionally invested in the lives of her families, she faces consternation with her husband and her boss.

Jane is drawn to the Hart family. She has to decide to help them or go along with the protocol. She finds dark secrets and tragedy on the farm.

Mandated sterilization of the poor and feeble minded was ugly and cruel. This brilliant book touches on that evil in our modern world. I was so intrigued by this topic of eugenics. Diane Chamberlain did a great job exploring the topic with dignity and respect. I loved it! 5/5⭐
