The River is Waiting by Wally Lamb
This was a tough one to read. It was full of emotional torment, gut wrenching pain, raw emotion, and honest experience. This devastatingly powerful novel will take you places that your mind and body are not comfortable with but it is so good. It makes you feel all the emotions in a meaningful way.
I also listened to the audiobook, and let me tell you, it’s excellent. The narrator was the best choice, the voice he gave to the story was intense and so wonderful.
In this book you will witness addiction, depression, death, loss, rape, and Covid. Such an authentic narrative was immersive for me as the reader. It allows the reader to experience the darkest corners of human nature and the torment with the raw injustice of incarceration.
In this story Corby Ledbetter experiences loss on so many levels. It’s heartbreaking. You go through all the stages of grief with him and you actually hate him at some points but the writing is phenomenal. To be able to package all of that up for a reader, tell a controversial but excellent story is a true talent beyond measure.
This one might leave you breathless as a man grapples with guilt and torment after incarceration for the death of his son.
This was my first book by Wally Lamb but his profound skill of putting raw carnage and the darkness of human kind on the pages of a book, earned my respect. The man writes pain in a way that embellishes your mind and soul.
This is one of the hardest books that I have experienced but it was so profoundly well done, representing the worst and finding redemption and forgiveness. I am a true fan! 5/5⭐
