My Friends by Fredrik Bachman
I immensely love reading Fredrik Bachman’s writing, it’s on a different level and it makes you think a little deeper than most. This was an excellent book!
My favorite quotes from this novel:
“The pier was so hot that the fourteen-year-old had to sit on their backpacks to stop their buttocks from getting scorched, and if there were any gusts of wind, they were less cooling than a hair dryer in a crematorium.”
“We want to look up to men, but we’d prefer to feel sorry for cats, that’s how the world works.”
“One of the teenagers farted and everyone laughed like crazy. If you only get a few summer days like that you’re truly lucky, if you only find one friend like that, you’re insanely fortunate.”
“That’s how long it takes to become best friends. A whole lifetime, a single second.”
“You can be whatever you want in life, as long as you don’t become a critic! Not of other people, and not of yourself. It’s so easy to be a critic, any coward can do that. But art doesn’t need critics, art has enough enemies already. Art needs friends”
Tomas Transtromer – “Don’t be ashamed to be a human being – be proud! Inside you one vault after another opens endlessly. You’ll never be complete, and that’s how it should be.”
“Art is what we leave of ourselves in other people.”
My Thoughts:
The story is so richly complex that I can’t adequately summarize it without giving it away, instead I give you my thoughts about what I read.
I feel like this was a wonderful story of self-realization and coming of age. The beautiful sentiment repeated so often among friends, “I love you and I believe in you,” resonates with me. What a beautiful lesson!
I really enjoyed reading this piece of art. The characters were so well developed and relatable, it was awesome connecting with their interactions within the circle of friends.
The beauty in life showed up with these friends and how they just loved one another. Nothing broke them as long as they had each other.
Wonderful storytelling and crafting characters into relatable pieces of your heart that will stay with the reader. This was well crated and layered. The character wee loveable. 5/5⭐
