Murder on the Red River by Marcie R. Rendon
This was a story set along the Red River Valley during the 1970s.
“Cash” has lived there her whole life. At 19, she has lived through a lot and is not afraid to chase down a clue to solve a crime. She is an Ojibwe woman just surviving as a drive on a tobacco farm and a side-kick sleuth for the local sheriff.
When a man is found murdered, she dives in to find answers.
This story explores the failures of the foster care system in relation to indigenous people. The culture is colored with a story of oppression, racism, genocide, and mystery.
As a debut to a new series, I think it was good. I found it predictable, and a little flat as far as the mystery plot. However, I do enjoy reading cultural stories with indigenous characters and this does fit that.
I think it may be well suited for a young adult audience with its cozy nature. 3/5⭐
